Wordpress Privacy Settings
« on: January 15, 2012, 04:18:44 AM »
Hi,

Installing my network of blogs and the default setting in the privacy setting is to "Ask search engines not to index this site"

Don't know whether that is standard, but it's worth everyone checking to see if it is...

Is this a change to the settings in new versions of WP?

It'd be vexing to have loads of sites set up that way, eh?

Hi JJ

You definitely need to change that to SEs indexing the sites, after all the whole network does not make sense if  the pages don't show up in the SEs. I have not seen that kind of behavior with any of my sites...

Having just read your post about Privacy Settings, I checked on about 10 of my blogs and thankfully they are all set to automatically allow indexing.

Whilst checking I noticed the following statement:-

Note: Neither of these options blocks access to your site — it is up to search engines to honor your request

Which appears under the two settings. It would appear that even if the setting is set to the wrong setting, the likelihood is that your site would still get searched.

Best though to ensure when setting up your sites that you go through the settings carefully.

Hi,

I don't know if it's standard or just whoever's hosting the blog that determines some of the settings and files when you're installing wordpress.

I have to get a .htaccess file from my working blogs to get the permalinks %postname% to work as well.

Maybe a look to a new host? Are you using their WP installer or is it 'proper' something  like Fantastico?

Hi,

It's in cpanel but not fantastico, but similar.

Apart from that they're a good host. Support is fast and its $2 an an IP address and the 2 hosts that I tried for $1 an IP address: one didn't like doing support so they gave me a refund instead; :) http://www.cclassiphosting.com/ conned me out of $30 and never gave me the hosting I paid for, and after 3 weeks my account is still showing as pending.

It's a fact Mike,

I thank you, ;D I doubt if my writer's site would have ever received a hit,
if not for your advice.
