Shablast error
« on: May 28, 2011, 01:11:48 PM »
Searching for "Healthcare for uninsured", get

Code: [Select]
Warning: mysql_fetch_assoc(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/shablast/public_html/index.php on line 384
Shablast     Advanced Search

it's repeatable.

Jack.

Yes, it repeated itself for me.
Actually, I tried another search term too and also got the same result.
Then, on the 3rd search term I got a "ran out of time" error.  :(

Fixed.  One of the database tables had to be repaired.

Jon, out of curiosity: How many servers / how big are the server you run Shablast on?
The idea of running your own serach engine sounds like you need a lot of resources for that...

I don't know if he runs his own search engine. When he started up Shablast, I think he was taking results from Bing and redoing them somehow - don't recall all the details.

Ah, I see, I just thought of the thousands of servers and multitude of datacenters google operates and thought it must be pretty hard for a small company to start a SE of their own...

I am using the Bing API, so it only requires on server. A full text engine indexing a hundred billion pages would require a pretty significant cluster of servers, though probably not as many as you think. Its once you get popular and start serving millions of queries per day that things would get interesting. :D

Yeah, and I guess without the "getting popular" part, being a search engine is not much fun ;-)
